SS-GATE Case Study – Launch of the East Africa Climate Innovation Network (EACIN)
EACIN is a joint initiative of the World Bank infoDev programme and the South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange (SS-GATE) of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
EACIN makes connections for entrepreneurship and innovation by supporting activities in critical catalytic areas:
Activity 1: Analysing existing technologies for climate change adaptation in East Africa EACIN will take stock of current climate change technologies, developers and distribution across the region and then assess the potential for scale-up.
Activity 2: Tapping ongoing regional networks EACIN seeks to engage effective partners and networks active in climate change technology and its transfer between developing countries. EACIN will identify potential partnerships and develop scenarios for synergies among networks. It will also identify potential linkages to markets for the technologies.
Activity 3: Preparing in-depth case studies Detailed technical and feasibility studies of selected cases will enable EACIN to assess approaches leading towards the full development of promising technologies and their commercial viability.
These key activities will be carried out by institutions in five partner countries. The Kenya Climate Innovation Center selected the institutions for their success in climate change innovation, notably in bioenergy.
